This report describes acid-deposition precursor control technologies and evaluates their application to Maryland's coal-fired power plants and the costs associated with these control technologies. Several control technologies could potentially be applicable to Maryland coal-fired power plants. The most widely applicable technologies were found to be coal switching and flue-gas desulfurization for sulfur dioxide emission control, and low NOx burners for nitrogen oxide emission control. However, the level of emission reduction required has not been established, and combinations of control technologies may also be feasible. Estimating the cost of constructing and installing a control technology at a specific site requires a substantial amount of information. Further screening of control alternatives would be necessary to perform these estimates.
