A tubing or rod gripping device employs a generally cylindrical gripping sleeve located in an abutment housing. The gripping sleeve encircles the rod or tubing and has internal gripping teeth on a canted axial bore. A smooth bore is generally coaxial with the longitudinal central axis of the sleeve and intersects the canted bore at an acute angle. The clamping device is used to suspend the string of tubing or rod in the hole while another joint or section is threaded onto the top of the string or removed from the string. (11 claims)
