Quenching of metastable He/sup +/ 2s ions by molecules

A time-dependent perturbation theory is used to obtain the cross sections and rates for the quenching of metastable helium ions in collision with molecules (H/sub 2/, N/sub 2/, O/sub 2/, and CO/sub 2/). The results are compared with the recent experimental data of Prior and Wang.
