This patent describes a drilling fluid additive for reducing lost circulation of aqueous drilling fluids in a borehole penetrating an underground formation. The process comprises a water absorbent polymer which expands upon absorbing water. The polymer is encapsulated by a waxy substance having a melting point below the temperature of the underground formation and above the bottom hole circulating temperature of the drilling fluid within the borehole.
