When large grains grow abnormally during the secondary recrystallization of Si-steel and other alloys, islands and peninsulas of single fine grains and clusters of fine grains are left behind the moving grain boundary front. The mechanism of this phenomenon has not yet been understood. Based on the results of computer simulation assuming anisotropic grain boundary energy which depended only on the misorientation between grains, Rollett et al. proposed that the large growing grains could wet the grain boundaries between the fine grains and hence leave isolated grains behind the growing grain boundary front. An abnormal gain growth (AGG) observed in aluminum was cited as an evidence for their simulation result. In this work the authors compare an AGG structure in an Fe-3wt% Si alloy with the simulation of Rollett et al.
