This patent describes a functionalized polymer capable of use as an additive in lubricating oils. The process comprises first units, derived from first monomer containing an ethylenically unsaturated carbon-to-carbon double bond; and second units, derived from a different second monomer, a dicarboxylic acid anhydride containing an ethylenically unsaturated carbon-to-carbon double bond; and the polymer bearing, bonded to the dicarboxylic-acid-derived moiety, functionalizing groups derived from: a primary or secondary functionalizing amine R/sup 7//sub 2/(NR/sup 9/)/sub ..cap alpha../NR/sup 8//sub 2/ where R/sup 7/ is alkyl, alkaryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, or aryl hydrocarbon, R/sup 8/ is hydrogen or selected from the same group as in R/sup 7/, R/sup 9/ is alkylene, aralkylene, cycloalkylene, alkarylene, or arylene, and a is 0.20. The amine is bonded to the polymer through a nitrogen atom of the amine group; and, a functionalizing Mannich base is formed by reacting a phenol containing an active hydrogen atom, an aldehyde and a primary or secondary polyamine. The Mannich base is bonded to the polymer through a nitrogen atom of the amine group.
