Extending life of offshore pipe lines by hot tapping

Tie-ins to existing subsea pipe lines and repairs to damaged pipe sections, done by time-proven hot tap techniques, can extend the operating life of an offshore line well beyond the original design life. In this first of a two-part article, the author details the procedures, the applicable codes and safety requirements for subsea hot taps.
