Serum FSH, LH, and testosterone in /sup 60/Co. gamma. -irradiated male rats

Adult male rats were exposed to 330 R of whole-body /sup 60/Co ..gamma.. irradiation. Groups of irradiated and nonirradiated control rats were killed at intervals up to 65 days after irradiation at the same time each day. Testes were examined histologically, and serum levels of FSH, LH, and testosterone were determined at each point, and intratesticular levels of testosterone in irradiated rats were not significantly different from those in controls at any interval. This would indicate that the selective absence of spermatogonia, spermatocytes, or spermatids at sequential intervals after irradiation did not directly or indirectly affect serum hormonal levels. Moreover, this dose of irradiation did not appear to alter the functional integrity of Sertoli and Leydig cells.
