Dr. Irving Wender, the 1982 recipient of the ACS Award in Petroleum Chemistry sponsored by the Lubrizol Corporation, received his B.S. from the City College of New York, his M.S. from Columbia University and his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. His work on the kinetics and mechanism of the hydroformylation reaction led to the commercialization of that reaction. Today it is the largest scale industrial process that uses a homogeneous metal complex as the catalyst. In 1951, he discovered the homologation reaction, the conversion of methanol to ethanol using a transition-metal carbonyl as catalyst. Today, research and development activity on this possible source of ethylene and of liquid fuels is under very active study. In 1954, he synthesized a new type of metallo-organic complex from Co/sub 2/(CO)/sub 8/ and acetylenes. These and other complexes synthesized while at the Bureau of Mines were the forerunners for the hosts of organometallics that followed. These studies led to new concepts of the modes of adsorption of unsaturated molecules on metal surfaces in heterogeneous catalysis.
