Effects of the configuration of a finned tube on the heat transfer characteristics of a latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) unit have been studied experimentally and theoretically. As a result, it is shown that the performance of the unit is almost the same for the finned tubes with the same surface area even if the fin configuration is quite different. Calculated results of heat fluxes for the two types of finned tubes, each of which has lateral fins or +-arranged longitudinal fins, are in good agreement with the experimental data, which confirms the validity of the calculations.
