The acute toxicity to algae of the water-soluble fractions of synthetic and petroleum-derived oils was researched. Fractions of eleven coal liquefaction products, five shale oil products, and six petroleum products were tested. The liquefaction products inhibited algal photosynthesis at water soluble fraction concentrations two orders of magnitude lower than the petroleum products. Shale oil products were intermediate in toxicity. (31 references, 2 tables)
