Rotary valve assembly for boosting type fuel injection

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6526532
This patent describes a fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine including a pressurized fuel supply source, fuel injectors and fuel metering means, a rotary valve assembly, comprising: a cylindrical housing having a cylindrical wall and an end wall. The cylindrical housing has first ports formed in the cylindrical wall and a second port formed in the end wall, each of the first ports being connected with the respective fuel injectors and the second port being connected with the metering means; a rotary spool rotatably mounted within the cylindrical housing defining a metering pressure chamber between an end face of the spool and the end wall of the cylindrical housing, the metering pressure chamber being in constant communication with the metering means through the second port. The spool has formed therein a fuel supply passage connected at one end with the pressurized fuel supply source and at the other end selectively connectible with one of the first ports as the rotary spool rotates within the housing; an extended metering groove formed circumferentially in the rotary spool, the metering groove being in constant communication with the metering pressure chamber and in selective communication with the first ports.
