The mechanism of discharge of the Li/LiAsF{sub 6}-propylene carbonate/FeS battery system has been studied by {sup 57}Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy of the cathode. The only product identifiable in the cathode reduction appears to be iron, some of which is present as small particles that exhibit superparamagnetism. There is no evidence for macroscopic amounts of a lithiated intermediate.
