Control method of controlling an air/fuel ratio control system in an internal combustion engine

This patent describes a control method for controlling an air/fuel ratio control system in an internal combustion engine comprising the steps of: setting a base air/fuel ratio control value in accordance with parameters of the engine operation relating to the load on the engine; setting an operational air/fuel ratio control value corresponding to a target air/fuel by correcting a set value of the base value in response to an output signal of an oxygen concentration sensor disposed in an exhaust gas passage of the internal combustion engine; controlling the air/fuel ratio of the mixture to be supplied to the internal combustion engine according to the operational air/fuel ration control value; setting a correction value indicative of an error caused by the lapse of time due to deterioration of the oxygen concentration sensor or to the carburetor of the internal combustion engine; detecting continuation of a light load operation of the internal combustion engine for more than a predetermined period; and selecting, as the air/fuel ration control value, an open loop control value by which the air/fuel ratio of the mixture can be controlled around the target air/fuel ratio.
