Development of sizing nomograms for stand-alone photovoltaic/storage systems
This paper described the development of a simplified technique for sizing stand-alone photovoltaic/storage systems. The sizing criterion is the long-term loss-of-load probability which is the fraction of the total energy demand that the photovoltaic system will not be able to satisfy over a 23 year period. The technique was derived using 23 years of hourly insolation data from 20 US weather stations. These data were used to develop correlations between the variability in insolation and average monthly horizontal insolation. The correlations were then used to generate sizing nomograms that give the array size as a function of average horizontal insolation and the storage capacity as a function of the long-term loss-of-load probability. The technique is valid for systems with a fixed tilt array, product or energy storage, and any hourly or daily demand profile provided that the average monthly demand does not vary by more than +-10% from month to month.
