The HgBr(B--X) transition forms the basis of an efficient laser at 502 nm. The HgBr(B) state is produced by electric discharge in gas mixtures containing HgBr/sub 2/. We report measurements of the HgBr(B--X) fluorescence efficiency as a function of electric field in electron beam sustained HgBr/sub 2//noble gas discharges. These measurements indicate that the dominant HgBr(B) formation channel is via direct electron impact on HgBr/sub 2/ by the process HgBr/sub 2/+e/sup -/ ..-->.. HgBr(B)+Br+e/sup -/.A Boltzmann analysis is used to derive an empirical cross section for this process.
