Feeder reconfiguration in electric-distribution systems

A heuristic method to solve the feeder-reconfiguration problem in electric-distribution systems is presented. The feeder reconfiguration problem is defined as altering the topological structures of the radial distribution feeders, in realtime, by changing the open/closed states of the sectionalizing and tie switches. The aim is (i) to minimize the power loss under the normal operating state, and (ii) to minimize the number of unserved customers after the occurrence of a fault at the emergency state. Under heavily loaded normal operating conditions, there may be transformers in the system that are overloaded, primary feeders with section thermal problems, or voltages along the feeders that are not within specific maximum and minimum limits. Feeder reconfiguration is utilized to remove such problems. Upon removal of all thermal and voltage violations, the system power loss is reduced by changing the open/closed states of the switches. There are the three basic steps in the heuristic method developed here: (i) the system is subdivided into smaller groups (group-selection); (ii) a feasible solution that has no thermal or voltage violations is found for each group (feasibility analysis); and (iii) the losses are minimized starting with a feasible solution within each group (loss minimization).
