Light water moderator filled rod for a nuclear reactor

This patent describes a neutron moderator filled rod, comprising: an elongated hollow tubular member having opposite ends and a hermetically sealed chamber defined therein between its opposite ends, the chamber being pressurized with an inert gas; and a boron-free moderator in liquid form partially filling the sealed chamber within the tubular member to a predetermined level leaving a vapor space between the predetermined level and an upper one of the end plugs, the moderator being free of neutron poison material.
