Deep-sea mining. [Review of global issues]

A review of the global issues associated with deep-sea mining covers areas of international contention and changes in international laws as a result of developing technologies, and goes on to indicate future areas of disagreement that are likely to develop. International meetings have addressed these problems since 1958, but have met with little success. There is currently general agreement that offshore sovereignty be limited to 12 miles, with a 200-mile exploitation line, and that ships should have free passage within these limits. Some agreement has evolved on how to settle international maritime disputes. Deep-sea mining will introduce new environmental problems and will be affected by World mineral supplies. Third world countries are concerned that Congress will legislate unilateral seabed regulations before a United Nations Treaty is developed. 16 references.
