This book is a history of the Atoms for Peace Awards. It records the award presentations to 22 distinguished contributors to the peaceful uses of the atom and includes the tributes, citations, responses, and addresses that constituted the proceedings of the 8 ceremonies that celebrated the achievements of the award recipients. Among the award recipients whose responses are now on permanent record are Niels Bohr, Leo Szilard, Eugene Wigner, Alvin Weinberg, Sir John Cockcroft, I. I. Rabi, Vladimir Veksler, Henry DeWolf Smyth, Aage Bohr, Ben Roy Mottelson, Anthony Turkevich, and Dwight Eisenhower. Most of the addresses presented in the book are concerned with the impact of science on the modern world and with the mutual interactions between science and public policy. Among the authors of these addresses and the tributes to award recipients are John A. Wheeler, Arthur H. Compton, Glenn Seaborg, Dag Hammarskjold, Manson Benedict, Norman Ramsey, George Beadle, Robert Bacher, Detlev Bronk, James R. Killian, Jr., and U Thant.
