6000 tpd SRC-I Demonstration Plant, gas systems, phenol recovery system, non-proprietary version: design baseline package
Detailed process descriptions, including process flow diagrams, process unit balance sheets, equipment design factors and data sheets, and a cost estimate summary of a phenol recovery system are presented. The purpose of the phenol recovery system is to remove and recover phenolic compounds from sour waters originated from the SRC coker/calciner and the Expanded Bed Hydrocracker (EBH) areas. A Chem-Pro Corporation proprietary process is used. The process was originally developed by Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation to remove phenol from coke oven waste waters and has a twenty year history of operation in that service. In the process, the phenol compounds are removed from the aqueous feed by countercurrent extraction into a solvent. The nearly phenol-free raffinate is steam stripped to remove and recover dissolved solvent thereby producing a discharge water acceptably low in both phenol and solvent content. The extract is distilled to separate the solvent from the phenolics. The solvent is recycled to the extractor and the phenolics become a process by-product. Design feed flow rates and compositions for various conditions are listed. In addition, the phenolic compounds are specified to be composed of 62% monohydric phenol, 23% cresols and 15% resorcinol. The discharge waste water is to contain no more than 50 mg/l of phenol as a compound nor 60 mg/l total phenolics. However, to meet the total phenolics specification, the residual phenolics in the waste water will be nearly all resorcinol with only 3 or 4 mg/l of phenol as a compound because the resorcinol is so much more difficult than phenol to extract with the solvent.
