Landscape design versus approximate original contour in Missouri

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6521439
Integration of the mine plan and reclamation plan has been accomplished at the Prairie Hill Mine. The result has been reduced topsoil handling and a system of large flat farm units separated by tree covered slopes that minimize overburden rehandling and maximize post-mining land value. The detailed analysis of pre-mining overburden, soils, land use, and mine design options has facilitated a practical mitigation of mining effects on the environment, while insuring cost effective utilization of mining and reclamation equipment. Innovations include an alternative to approximate original contour, substitution of overburden materials for prime farmland subsoil, and rearrangement of landscape features to increase post-mining land value. 7 figures.
