Although a number of studies on the mechanical properties of Ti[sub 3]Al-based alloys have been conducted, limited data on the fatigue behavior have been reported. More specifically, there is very little information on the microscopic mechanisms of fatigue crack growth (FCG), despite the fact that the damage tolerance in titanium aluminide intermetallics is the subject of considerable concern. The objective of the present investigation is to study the microscopic fatigue crack growth behavior in a Ti-24Al-11Nb alloy. Special attention was given to the path of the fatigue crack through the microstructure, fracture mode and effects of R-ratio and crack closure on the fatigue crack growth behavior.
