The lanthanide alkyls Cp{sub 2}*LnCH(SiMe{sub 3}){sub 2} (Ln = La, Ce) are efficient catalysts for the cyclodimerization of 2-alkynes MeC{triple bond}Cr (R = Me, Et, n-Pr) to 1,2-disubstituted 3-alkylidenecyclobutenes. The first step in the reaction is a propargylic metalation of the {alpha}-methyl group, giving Cp*{sub 2}LnCH{sub 2}C{triple bond}CR compounds and free CH{sub 2}(SiMe{sub 3}){sub 2}.
