Symposium casts light on mine illumination

The paper describes the proceedings of the meeting of the International Committee on Mine Illumination. Studies on discomfort and disability glares under various lighting systems, with both miners and non-mining personnel, was described. A task analytic approach, identifying the information needed to do various tasks underground and relating this to illumination levels, is described. Specifications for mine lighting systems using visibility and reflectance data are outlined. Lighting in mines in current use is described, for both underground and surface mines. The cost effectiveness of the illumination systems and an outline of government policy on lighting in mines are also covered.
