Title: Seismic and resistivity techniques for locating abandoned coal mine workings

Conference · · Geophysics; (United States)
OSTI ID:6515594

Recent Bureau of Mines studies with seismic and resistivity methods indicate the outline of abandoned coal mine workings can be delineated. The various methods provide evidence for abandoned mines within 50 m to the surface, to depths of 100m or more. The Bureau methods are described, and case histories are presented to show feasibility of the technology. The resistivity methods are primary Wenner array, continous profiling, procedures. The seismic methods are shallow 3-D using small explosive charges and piezoelectric crystal-stack signal sources.
