The first model of a new family of high-efficiency, industrial gas turbines, Caterpillar Tractor Co.'s 2238-kW (3000-hp) two-shaft Model 5650 gas turbine is currently in commercial service on a limited evaluation basis. This new product comes at an appropriate time in view of market conditions for gas turbines today, primarily because it is a recuperated unit with an attractive rated power fuel economy of 0.385 lb/hp-hr at a conservative turbine inlet temperature of 1775/sup 0/F. This low fuel consumption is the result of the effective energy recovery of the proprietary-design recuperator and efficient aerodynamic components, including a two-stage centrifugal compressor. The 5650's family will eventually cover an output range of approximately 1500-3800 kW.
