A new process for the separation of hafnium from zirconium has been developed, based on the repeated reaction of the mixed tetrachloride vapors of zirconium and hafnium with alkali metal chloride salts in a solid form. Hafnium tends to remain in the condensed phase while zirconium concentrates in the vapor phase. This process has been investigated experimentally as a function of the alkali chloride salt, the number of reaction steps, and the mass ratio of vapor-to-condensed phases. The mechanism of the separation process is discussed in terms of thermodynamic considerations and the calculation of the theoretical separation efficiency is in agreement with the experimental results.
