Unorthodox view of the North-South dialogue

The North-South dialogue should be taken seriously because southern rhetoric could lead to political actions and because humanitarianism requires that the developed world do all it can to help the Third World. It is important to remember that much of the poor distribution of capital is the result of the North producing more wealth than people, while the South has produced more people than wealth when evaluating the call for a New International Economic Order (NEIO). The NEIO countries are calling for new rights for the developing world and new codes of conduct for multinational enterprise, but there seems to be little relationship between the legal manuevering in world forums and pragmatic transnational business. The US and its allies could withdraw to an inactive role in confrontational forums like the United Nations until there is some correction to the present structural imbalance caused by developing countries with limited resources and unlimited demands. The Brandt Commission proposals or some other framework is needed to bring the world's nations together to resolve the oil production/consumption dilemma in a way that is mutually helpful. 12 references.
