The author of this book has opted to address only alternative energy sources that are suitable for central-station generation of electricity. The book covers wind, wave and tidal energy, ocean thermal conversion, salinity gradients, ocean currents, geothermal energy, photovoltaic conversion, and solar thermal generation and solar ponds. Each alternative energy discussion begins with coverage of the medium involved and the theory of power production and energy conversion. The theoretical approaches are mathematical but generally straightforward and address only first order effects. The dynamics and geographical aspects of the energy sources are considered as well as their theoretical and practical limitations.
