Exploration for oil and natural gas is enjoying a renaissance onshore in eastern Canada and offshore in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. A number of factors contribute to this emerging scenario. They include new exploration concepts, advancing technology, the improved availability of equipment and services, and the advent of the Sable gas pipeline to carry gas from Sable offshore gas fields through onshore Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to markets in the Canadian Maritime Provinces and New England US. This article covers mainly exploration opportunities and activities in Quebec, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward island. Two major sedimentary basins cover much of the eastern part of these territories.
