Dilute Nb-H alloys which contain 100--400 ppma H contain small, coherent hydrides and are strengthened substantially by these precipitates as expected from appropriate hardening models. Nb-H alloys with 800--4,000 ppma H are less substantially strengthened by Orowan-like hardening mechanisms for semi-coherent or incoherent hydrides. Both prismatic and shear dislocations are generated from these non-coherent hydrides and contribute to reduced flow stresses and enhanced tensile plasticities relative to unalloyed Nb. As a component of the hydride-induced softening process, glissile dislocations can be formed from the prismatic dislocations by a dislocation reaction model proposed by Bernstein, Hirth and Hwang.
