A complete x-ray diffraction investigation of crystals of the complex of cupric chloride with tetraphenylmethylenediphosphine dioxide (L = (C/sub 6/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/P(O)CH/sub 2/P(0) (C/sub 6/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/) having the formula (CuL/sub 3/)(Cu/sub 2/Cl/sub 6/) x (CH/sub 3/)/sub 2/CO has been carried out. It has been shown that the copper atom in the (CuL/sub 3/)/sup 2 +/ cation has octahedral coordination, which is slightly distorted to an extended tetragonal bipyramid (d/sub eq//d/sub ax/ = 0.93). The copper atom of the cation appears in three six-membered chelate rings, which are formed by the ligand molecules and have boat conformations. The (Cu/sub 2/Cl/sub 6/)/sup 2 -/ anion has a nonplanar structure, and the copper atoms in it have flattened tetrahedral coordination. Such a configuration is characteristic of salts of hexachlorodicuprates with bulky cations, which completely shield the anions from one another.
