Photochemical reactions of nitrite complexes of platinum(IV)

The photochemical reactions of complex nitrites of platinum(IV) with the general formula K/sub 2/ (Pt(NO/sub 2/)/sub 6-x/X/sub x/, where X = Cl/sup -/, Br/sup -/, and x = 0 to 3, have been studied. It has been shown that the absorption spectra of all the nitrite complexes display two intense bands at lambda = 330 and 280 nm. Photoexcitation of the complex nitrites of Pt(IV) in aqueous solutions (T = 293/sup 0/K) at wavelengths from 254 to 404 nm results in the occurrence of a single photoreduction reaction to the corresponding platinum(II) nitrates, regardless of the composition of the complex ion. The quantum yields of the photoreduction reaction have been measured. It has been established that photolysis at low temperature (T = 77/sup 0/K) and in rigid matrices (glycerol-water and polyvinyl alcohol films) results in the formation of nitrito isomers of the platinum(IV) complex. It has been shown that two intraligand charge-transfer states are the states responsible for the photochemical reactions.
