The types of coordination of the di-2-ethylhexylphosphate anion (X/sup -/) to M/sup +/ (M = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and Mg/sup 2 +/ in solid salts and in their solutions in CCl/sub 4/ have been studied by IR spectroscopy (25-4000 cm/sup -1/). The combination LiX forms only polymers of type (I); NaX and KX form not only I, but also two types of monomers, (II) and (III), and RbX and CsX form practically only III and I to only a slight extent. The compound Mgx/sub 2/ forms linear polymeric molecules of the (MgX/sub 2/)/sub n/ type, in which the four oxygen atoms in the first coordination sphere of Mg/sup 2 +/ form a distorted tetrahedron. The forms CaX/sub 2/ and BaX/sub 2/ contain two or more inequivalent types of POO groups. The laws obtained for the variation of the types of coordination of POO groups to the M/sup +/ cation along the series from Li/sup +/ to Cs/sup +/ have been discussed in connection with the changes in the density of the charges on the M/sup +/ cations and their radii. It has been established that the interaction of the polymeric (LiX)/sub n/ molecules with pyridine (Py) results in the formation of short-chain (LiX 2Py)/sub n/ polymers and that the interaction in 100% pyridine results in the formation of long-chain polymers and monomeric molecules of type II. The properties of the salts studied and the corresponding carboxylates have been compared. The structure types are illustrated.
