This patent describes a cask for transporting and storing spent nuclear fuel elements, comprising: a tubular outer shell; an inner shell concentric with the outer shell; a gamma radiation-attenuating material disposed between the outer shell and inner shells; basket members disposed within the inner shell. Each of the basket members comprising radial walls and a circumferential wall formed of a thermal conducting material. The radial walls are connected at their outer ends to the circumferential wall; open, elongated fuel-receiving modules disposed within the baskets. At least some of the modules are in contact with the radial walls; and means urging the circumferential walls of the baskets into contact with the inner shell. The means comprises shim elements disposed intermediate opposed radial walls of adjacent basket members.
