The pipeline industry has been involved in the transportation of slurries since the late 1950's with over twenty major commercial installations operational to date. With the increasing demand for coal as a primary energy source, the transportation of coal slurry over long distances is becoming a reality and pipelines to support this requirement are being designed today. This paper addresses some of the particular requirements imposed on the control systems aspects of water carrier slurry pipelines. Although not intended to cover all of the specific control methods chosen to meet all the requirements of this type of pipeline operation, this paper indicates which tools in local and supervisory control systems are needed to successfully implement the specific control methods. Superiority of systems as described in this paper already include the areas of: control capabilities, maintainability, design and implementation, flexibility and growth. All of these factors will contribute significantly towards the success of the large coal slurry pipeline applications. A high level of support for the type of system described in this paper has been found with leading control system manufacturers which are offering more of these systems as a standard products.
