COM boiler test results mixed: limited utility application seen. [Coal-oil mixtures]

Coal-oil mixture (COM) tests by three utilities found COM to be technically feasible, but less desirable to full conversion to coal except when full conversion is impossible. DOE plans to support COM demonstrations have been halted as utility interest in the fuel waned. The three-to-one price differences between oil and coal is responsible for some of the disinterest (although this can be outweighed in some cases when the cost of conversion is too high) as well as the fouling of boilers with soot and slag. The future for COM appears to lie with existing boilers that were designed strictly to burn oil, especially among industrial users of fuel oil. (DCK)
