Structure of negative parity high-spin states in /sup 34/Cl

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., C; (United States)

The /sup 31/P(..cap alpha..,n) /sup 34/Cl reaction at 13.0 and 14.6 MeV ..cap alpha.. energies was used to investigate /sup 34/Cl levels at 4743 keV (J/sup ..pi../ = 6/sup -/), 3632 keV (J/sup ..pi../ = 5/sup -/), and 3600 keV (J/sup ..pi../ = 4/sup -/) excitation energy. Angular distribution measurements and lifetime determinations by the recoil distance method were performed. Lifetimes of 7 +- 3, 280 +- 60, and 23 +- 5 ps were obtained for the 4743, 3632, and 3600 keV levels, respectively. The value of the lifetime for the 4743 keV level yields a negative parity assignment for this state. Strong E2 and E3 deduced transition strengths are related to the transition strengths deexciting quadrupole and octupole vibrations in the core nucleus /sup 32/S.
