The eradication of CFCs

This article discusses the difficulties that must be met to produce chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) substitutes. Many manufacturers have retrofitted to produce hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) but the transition to non-ozone depleting hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) is virtually impossible in existing plants. The switchover to CFC substitutes will require close cooperation between manufacturers and their end users. There are an estimated 130 million motor vehicle air conditioners, 160 million home refrigerators, 5 million commercial refrigeration systems, and 80,000 building chillers, all of which must convert from CFCs.
