Primer initiation. Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6505129
The study investigated two schemes to measure firing pin kinetic energy and velocity to test reliability of a device to fire a percussion primer. One scheme substituted a force transducer for the primer. The other scheme, which used the measurement of the depth of firing pin penetration in a soft copper disk, was found preferable to the first scheme. The crater depth measurements in the second approach were a function of kinetic energy and independent of striking velocity over designated ranges. Results are presented and discussed.
