Bullwinkle was set this summer in Green Canyon Block 65. The platform is about 360 miles east of Corpus Christi and 150 miles south southwest of New Orleans. After drilling four wells and four sidetracks to delineate the reserves on Block 65 and adjacent Blocks 109 and 64, the bidding process for the jacket began in 1984. In 1985, the contract for constructing the platform was awarded to Gulf Marine. Jacket construction took place at its Ingleside Point yard near Corpus Christi, Tex. The experience of Shell's professional design group in designing about 150 structures, including the Cognac platform (set in the previous water depth of 1,025 ft), provided the basis for designing steel jackets for Gulf of Mexico water depths of 1,500-2,000 ft. Platform construction took 3 years, 1985-1988. Bullwinkle is the world's largest offshore structure.
