Proper motions were determined for discrete features in the complex outer shell of eta Carinae, from plates taken at Radcliffe Observatory during 1949--1950 and at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory during 1975. Two condensations north of the central object have tangential velocities in excess of 1000 km s/sup -1/, the highest yet observed in the eta Car nebulosity. On the other hand, the outermost features move more slowly; this motion implies ejection, possibly during the fifteenth century, on the assumption of uniform motions. 4 figures, 4 tables.
