We study the decay of [eta] mesons into [pi][sup 0] and a photon pair via the quark-box mechanism in a phenomenological quark model. The main parameters of the model are the [eta][ital qq] and [pi][ital qq] couplings, which are fixed by the [eta][r arrow][gamma][gamma] and [pi][sup 0][r arrow][gamma][gamma] decays. With constituent quark masses of 300 MeV for [ital u] and [ital d] quarks we find the width to be 0.70 eV, in good agreement with the experimental value of 0.84[plus minus]0.18 eV. In contrast, chiral perturbation theory gives a width of 0.42 eV. A detailed comparison with the vector-meson dominance model is also given.
