Interpretation of the change in optimal salinity with overall surfactant concentration

Most chemical flooding formulations show a change in optimal salinity with overall surfactant concentration when the phase behavior is observed in test tubes. This work seeks the mechanism for the observed change in optimal salinity so that the calculated optimal salinity can be expressed as a function of the appropriate intensive variables rather than the overall surfactant concentration. It is concluded that for the systems investigated the change in optimal salinity can be described as a function of the fraction of the alcohol-like component associated with the surfactant and of the divalent ion fraction of the associated counterions. 19 refs.
