Probing [alpha]-particle wave functions using ([ital [rvec d]],[alpha]) reactions

Wave functions of the [alpha] particle corresponding to different [ital S]- and [ital D]-state deuteron-deuteron overlaps, [l angle][ital dd][vert bar][alpha][r angle], were investigated using exact finite-range distorted-wave Born-approximation (DWBA) analyses of ([ital [rvec d]],[alpha]) reactions. Cross sections, vector, and tensor-analyzing powers were measured for ([ital [rvec d]],[alpha]) reactions populating the lowest [ital J][sup [pi]]=7[sup +] state in [sup 56]Co at bombarding energies [ital E][sub [ital d]] of 16 and 22 MeV, the lowest 7[sup +] state in [sup 48]Sc at [ital E][sub [ital d]]=16 MeV, and the lowest 7[sup +] state in [sup 46]Sc at [ital E][sub [ital d]]=22 MeV. We find that DWBA analyses of tensor-analyzing powers produce satisfactory agreement with the data and that [ital A][sub [ital x][ital x]] is especially sensitive to the [ital D]-state component of [alpha]-particle wave functions generated by different realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions.
