One-piece tie-in procedure saves 20 days at Ekofisk

McDermott International, Inc., working with Solus Ocean Systems Inc. (SOS), has developed and successfully employed a method of accelerating hyperbaric tie-ins between deepwater platforms and subsea pipe lines. In two pipe line tie-ins at Amoco of Norway's Ekofisk riser platform, McDermott reduced the number of hyperbaric welds required per tie-in from four to two by installing the riser and the expansion loop as a single unit. The risers were tied into existing 20-in. gas and oil lines near the platform base. McDermott engineers estimate that single-piece installation saved 20 days of construction time over conventional tie-in practices.
