Pipeline Gas Demonstration Plant: Phase I. Demonstration plant engineering and design. Volume 13. Plant Section 1200, Phenol Extraction

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6495840
Contract No. EF-77-C-01-2542 between Conoco Inc. and the US Department of Energy provides for the design, construction, and operation of a demonstration plant capable of processing bituminous caking coals into clean pipeline quality gas. The project is currently in the design phase (Phase I). This phase is scheduled to be completed in June 1981. One of the major efforts of Phase I is the process and project engineering design of the Demonstration Plant. The design has been completed and is being reported in 24 volumes. This is Volume 13 which covers the design of Plant Section 1200 - Phenol Extraction. The Phenol Extraction unit employs the Phenosolvan Process to remove phenolic materials from the gas liquor from the Gas Liquor Separation Section. Phenols are recovered by solvent extraction using isopropyl ether in a series of mixer-settler tanks. The solvent-phenol mixture is separated by distillation. The solvent is recycled to the extractors, and the crude phenols are transferred to storage. The Phenol Extraction unit is designed to produce 360 pounds per hour of crude phenol product.
