This paper describes the application of a trajectory sensitivity method to the identification of synchronous generator reactances and excitation system time constants. The evaluation of the identification method is performed using different types of disturbances in a single synchronous generator, single line to infinite bus power system. This generator is modeled in great detail to provide an accurate reference model. The robustness and performance of the method is tested by identifying the d- and q-axis reactances of a less detailed synchronous machine model. The performance of the identification method is evaluated by comparing time responses and transfer functions of the reference and the identified models using different types of faults. This method of parameter identification is valuable as it gives model parameter values appropriate to the conditions of generator operation, namely full speed, full flux, and under load.
