The ultimate products of the electroreduction of WCl/sub 6/ in acidic AlCl/sub 3//sup -/NaCl melts at tungsten and platinum electrodes were investigated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS analysis reveals the presence of tungsten species, having formal oxidation state between 0 and +2, on electrode surfaces. Evidence for the formation of metallic tungsten at platinum electrodes was also obtained. An XPS study performed on tungsten electrodes electrolyzed in acidic chloroaluminates at the chlorine evolution potential revealed no protective polymeric tungsten chloride film.
